KU-EHS January Safety Tip: Winter Safety

Winter Safety Facts

Why do you think the National Weather Service refers to winter storms as "Deceptive Killers"?

  • Most fatalities that occur during a winter storm are not caused by the storm itself.
  • Most deaths are the result of traffic accidents on icy roads and overexposure due to extreme cold.

How many emergency room visits are attributed to snow-shoveling injuries each year?

  • a. 1,000
  • b. 5,000
  • c. 10,000
  • d. None of the above

The answer is c: 10,000

  • More than 10,000 people visit emergency rooms each year due to overexertion and injuries from shoveling snow.

What are some factors besides cold temperatures and strong winds that can make a person more susceptible to cold stress?

  • Wet or damp clothing
  • Dressing improperly
  • Exhaustion
  • Predisposing health conditions such as hypertension, hypothyroidism and diabetes
  • Poor physical conditioning

How can you avoid injury in wintry conditions? Dress appropriately by wearing:

  • A hat and a scarf or knit mask to cover the face
  • Sleeves that are snug at the wrist
  • Waterproof gloves
  • Water-resistant coat and boots
  • Several layers of loose-fitting clothing

Stay dry:

  • Excess perspiration increases heat loss, so remove extra layers of clothing whenever you feel too warm.
  • Remember that wet clothing will also cause the body to chill more rapidly.

Avoid overexertion:

  • Cold weather puts an extra strain on the heart.
  • Be aware of any health conditions that could place you at greater risk of injury or illness.

Avoid falls:

  • Wear the proper footgear.
  • Watch for icy surfaces on streets and sidewalks.
  • Take it slow.

Be Smart, Be Safe
Wintry weather is dangerous for a variety of reasons. If you have to be outside, don't take any chances — be prepared.
